Insurance Requirements for Exchange Students
Health and Accident Insurance
All students on the J-1 visa are required by the U.S. government to carry adequate accident and health insurance. At a minimum, this policy must provide for $50,000 coverage for expenses of illnesses and accidents, $10,000 medical evacuation, and $7,500 repatriation of remains.
Advisory: Students on exchange through ISEP should have paid for the ISEP insurance plan, which meets the U.S. government standard for exchange visitors. All other students on exchange are required to buy the NMSU International Student Insurance Policy.
Advisory: Since travel insurance policies do not cover dental and eye care (except for injury), students are advised to take care of any dental or eye care problems prior to coming to the U.S. Also be advised that most policies do not cover pre-existing medical conditions for a period up to 12 months or more.
