INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
The following information is provided as a guide. Placement in a program is subject to approval by the course instructor. An advertised program may be unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances.
Overview
NMSU departments organize internship programs for regular graded credit, distance education graded credit, or transfer credit. Students enroll at NMSU and then go abroad to complete the internship under faculty supervision.
Procedures
Students will be provided instructions by the internship spervisor for completing the requirements for all internships sponsored by NMSU.
Forms
Students enrolled in internships for distance education credit fill out the NMSU Study Abroad Agreement-International Distance Education. Students enrolled in internships while enrolled in a regular course for credit must fill out only the student participant section of the NMSU Study Abroad Agreement-Resident Student Travel Programs. Students enrolled in internships while enrolled in exchange student status fill out the NMSU Study Abroad Agreement-Trasnsfer Credit Programs.
Scholarships
Some internship programs may be eligible for local or IFSA scholarships.
Application Deadlines
Each internship program has its own application deadlines.
Office of Study Abroad Priority Administrative Deadlines
The Office of Study Abroad needs sufficient time to process applications, set up files, administer orientation, and enroll students in NMSU distance education courses. The Office has set May 1 as the deadline for programs starting Fall, and November 15 for those starting Spring. By these priority deadlines, students must have (1) submitted the application to the internship supervisor and provided the office with a copy, (2) paid the NMSU internship fee (or arranged for billing authorization if receiving financial aid), (3) completed the appropriate Study Abroad Agreement and turned it in to the Office, and (4) completed the appropriate WebCT orientation course.. Students who apply after the priority deadline or fail to complete the other requirements listed above are subject to Late Processing Fees.
Standard Fees Paid to NMSU
Most internships in education have a $300 fee assessed, plus the cost of NMSU tuition for full-time enrollment at NMSU.
Other Costs
Consider the costs of a Passport (about $110), travel to site by air-bus-train, and Personal Miscellaneous Expenses. Costs are subject to change at any time. Penalties may apply for early withdrawal after accepting placement. Since currency exchange rates fluctuate, review the most current rates for converting U.S. dollars to a foreign currency.
