INTENSIVE LANGUAGE OVERVIEW
The following information is provided as a guide. Placement in a program is subject to approval by the Office of Study Abroad and an advertised program may be unavailable for unforeseen circumstances.
Overview
Students studying Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Japanese will be enrolled in the intensive language by distance education graded credit option. Students studying German, Arabic, or Chinese will be enrolled in the transfer credit option. Students in good standing and enrolled at other universities (or recent high school graduates with a 2.5 g.p.a.) may apply to enroll in the intensive language program by distance education option (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Japanese only) only. Intensive language study at language institutes is limited to winter break or summer for NMSU degree seeking students (except when the institute is affiliated with a university). NOTE: PORTUGUESE 113 IS GRADED S/U ONLY.
Procedures for Graded Credit or Transfer Credit
Currently enrolled NMSU students apply through the Office of Study Abroad after consulting with the Foreign Studies Advisor, Languages and Linguistics, to determine what credit can be earned. They will follow either the distance education procedures or the transfer credit procedures. Non-NMSU students will first complete the Intensive Language by Distance Education application then consult with the Foreign Studies Advisor to determine appropriate courses to take (Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Japanese only). All students must complete the NMSU WebCT orientation course and the NMSU final evaluation survey to receive credit.
Forms
Currently enrolled NMSU students use the form NMSU Study Abroad Agreement-International Distance Education to finalize approval to enroll in the intensive language program.
Scholarships
NMSU degree seeking undergraduate or graduate students may apply for intensive language study scholarships administered by the Office of Study Abroad in partnership with these language institutes: Actilingua, AF Lyon, BridgeAbroad, CPI, Cuauhnáhuac, Fenix, NRCSA, and PIEE. Awards are generally worth the value of two weeks of tuition, room and board, and students must agree to study for at least four weeks and provide service to the Office of Study Abroad upon return. Awards are available for summer or winter break study only.
Application Deadlines
Each language institute sets its own application deadlines. As a general rule, students should apply at least 2 month prior to anticipated enrollment.
