SHIJIAZHUANG LANGAUGE & CULTURAL COLLEGE

Applications to Shijiazhuan are subject to review and approval by Dr. Kenneth Hammond and the Office of Study Abroad and an advertised program may be unavailable due to imbalances in the exchange or for other unforeseen circumstances. Program costs are subject to change.
Options
In addition to learning Chinese intensively, students may also take other courses on an independent study basis. The exchange is unique since NMSU students have a service obligation to also teach English,. and exchange students from China teach Chinese at NMSU. Note: No institutional web site available. Chances of Placement 
Excellent. After two semesters, students may change status to tuition only exchange program.
Eligibility
GPA 2.75 with interest in Asian Studies and desire to learn Chinese, plus willingness to teach English part time. Prospective students should consult with Dr. Kenneth Hammond, History Department.
Application Deadlines Latest date by which application must be received by Shijiazhuang: Fall (August) March 15 and Spring (January) October 31. NMSU's priority administrative deadline is May 1 for Fall and October 15 for Spring.
Paid to NMSU
For 2008-2009: Application fee ($300), tuition per semester ($2,379), program fee per semester ($200), housing based on apartment options ($1625), Meal Plan including cafeteria closing allowance ($1,600), HTH insurance ($38 per month). After two semesters, students may request to change status to tuition only exchange program.
Paid to SLCC
Cost of all program arrangements organized by SLCC. After 2 semesters students may opt to pay housing and meal costs to SLCC at their rates.
Insurance HTH required.
Scholarships
Students should apply for local, federal and privale scholarships. The IFSA scholarship may be used for study on exchange at SLCC . Students with Pell grants should apply for Gilman awards (up to $5,000) for study abroad. Students should apply for Freeman grants (up to $7,000) for study in Asia, NSEP (Boren) Undergraduate and Graduate Awards to study Chinese ($7,000 plus per semester).
Withdrawal Penalties
Students who have accepted the SLCC placement then withdraw will be charged $200 by NMSU to recover its administrative expenses. Students who accept an academic year placement may have to pay the entire cost of the program if they withdraw early. Other SLCC penalties for unrecoverable costs may apply for early withdrawal after accepting placement.
