The following information is provided as a guide. Applications to SGU are subject to review and approval by the Office of Study Abroad and an advertised program may be unavailable due to imbalances in the exchange or for other unforeseen circumstances. Program costs are subject to change.
Options
Japanese language from beginner to advanced, plus courses taught in English: communications, business, government, history, and more. Independent study also possible. Semester or Academic Year exchange. Calendar: Fall-- September December, Spring --January-May.
Chances of Placement Excellent. Expect to be able to place NMSU students beginning Spring 2008.
Eligibility
Minimum GPA of 3.0 with sophomore standing by time of exchange for undergraduates. Knowledge of Japanese preferred but university can provide Japanese instruction at all levels.
Application Deadlines
Latest date by which application must be received by SKU: Fall (Septembert) March 15 and Spring (January ) September 1. NMSU's priority administrative deadline is May 1 for Fall and October 15 for Spring, after which late processing fees apply.
Paid to NMSU
For 2008-2009: Application fee ($300), tuition per semester ($2,379), program fee per semester ($200), HTH insurance ($38 per month) unless students required to purchase Japanese student insurance.
Paid to SKU
Cost of all program arrangements organized by SKU. Students housed in dormitories and mixed with Japanese students. Contact SKU coordinator for assistance and current rates.
Insurance HTH required unless Japanese insurance required, then BETA required for medical evacuation.
Scholarships
Students should apply for Freeman and Bridging Scholarships for study in Japan and NSEP (Boren) Undergraduate and Graduate Awards to study Japanese. Students with Pell grants should apply for Gilman awards (up to $5,000) for study abroad. All students can apply for NMSU administered Colin Williamson, Mesilla Valley, and IFSA scholarships.
Withdrawal Penalties
Students who have accepted the SGU placement then withdraw will be charged $200 by NMSU to recover its administrative expenses. Students who accept an academic year placement may have to pay the entire cost of the program if they withdraw early. Other Seinan penalties for unrecoverable costs may apply for early withdrawal after accepting placement.
