Options
Japanese Language and Japanese Studies Program (JLJSP) is aimed at students whose main focus is the mastery of the Japanese Language. Contemporary Japan Program in Nagoya (CJPN) is aimed at students whose main focus is to broaden their knowledge of contemporary Japan. Contemporary Japan is taught in English. Academic calendar for Spring is about March 24-July 18, and Fall is about September 10-December 12.
Chances of Placement Excellent.
Eligibility
Minimum GPA of 3.0 with sophomore standing by time of exchange for undergraduates. Knowledge of Japanese preferred but university can provide Japanese instruction at all levels.
Application Deadlines
Latest date by which application must be received by Nagoya: Fall (August) April 30 and Spring (January ) October 31. NMSU's priority administrative deadline is May 1 for Fall and October 15 for Spring, after which late processing fees apply.
Paid to NMSU
For 2008-2009: Application fee ($300), tuition per semester ($2,379), program fee per semester ($200), HTH insurance ($38 per month).
Paid to Nagoya
Cost of all program arrangements organized by Nagoya. Students housed in dormitories or with host families. Contact NUFS coordinator for assistance and current rates.
Insurance HTH required.
Scholarships
NUFS will consider NMSU students for Japanese scholarships. Students should also apply for Freeman and Bridging Scholarships for study in Japan and NSEP (Boren) Undergraduate and Graduate Awards to study Japanese. Students with Pell grants should apply for Gilman awards (up to $5,000) for study abroad. All students can apply for NMSU administered Colin Williamson, Mesilla Valley, and IFSA scholarships.
Withdrawal Penalties
Students who have accepted the Nagoya placement then withdraw will be charged $200 by NMSU to recover its administrative expenses. Students who accept an academic year placement may have to pay the entire cost of the program if they withdraw early. Other Nagoya penalties for unrecoverable costs may apply for early withdrawal after accepting placement.
