The following information is provided as a guide. Applications to Kansai Gaidai are subject to review and approval by the Office of Study Abroad and an advertised program may be unavailable due to imbalances in the exchange or for other unforeseen circumstances. Program costs are subject to change.
Options
Kansai Gaidai University, Hirikata City, Osaka Prefecture, provides Japanese language courses at all levels (spoken Japanese, reading, and writing Japanese) in the morning, and an Asian Studies program is offered in English in the afternoon with a wide variety of courses in business, humanities, social sciences, and studio arts. Homestays and dormitories available.
Chances of Placement APPLY BY FEBRUARY FOR NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR (SEMESTER ONLY PLACEMENTS) SINCE SPACE IS LIMITED.
Eligibility GPA of 3.0 with junior standing or above by time of exchange plus strong interest in learning Japanese
Application Deadlines Fall deadline is March 1 and Spring deadline is October 1.
Paid to NMSU
For 2008-2009: Processing fee ($300),tuition per semester ($2379), program fee per semester ($200), housing based on apartment options ($1,625), meal plan including cafeteria closing allowance ($1,600), HTH insurance ($38 per month). Note: Kansai Gaidai prefers students to participate in their homestay program which fully covers housing and meals with the family. If they choose the Kansai Gaidai dormitory option, which does not include meals, Kansai Gaidai will refund that portion of the board fee to the student to cover meal expenses.
Paid to KG
Cost of all program arrangements organized by KG. Students chosing the dormitory option must clarify with KG how much they will receive as a meal allowance since meals are not covered in the dormitory arrangement. This may or may not be sufficient to cover actual cost of arranging one's own meals and students will have to budget extra to cover the shortfall.
Scholarships
Students eligible for Freeman and Bridging Scholarships for study in Japan and NSEP (Boren) Undergraduate and Graduate Awards to study Japanese. All students can apply for NMSU administered Colin Williamson, Mesilla Valley, and IFSA scholarships.
Withdrawal Penalties 
Students who have accepted the KG placement then withdraw will be charged $200 by NMSU to recover its administrative expenses. Students who accept an academic year placement may have to pay the entire cost of the program if they withdraw early. Other KG penalties for unrecoverable costs may apply for early withdrawal after accepting placement.
