OFFICE LOCATION & PURPOSE

Garcia AnnexStudy Abroad Programs and Exchange Visitor Services is located on the 2nd Floor of Garcia Annex, adjacent to the Corbett Center Student Union. The Office is open 10-12 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments are accepted from students and exchange visitors who cannot visit at these times (call 646-5107). This International Education Program Development and Coordination Unit within the Office of International & Border Programs assists Colleges and Departments to integrate study abroad into the undergraduate and graduate curriculum and manages support services for outbound study abroad students and for inbound international exchange students. Students on the main campus and at all the branch community colleges in the NMSU system may apply to study or travel abroad while maintaining NMSU student status.The Unit is also responsible for implementing the Exchange Visitor Program sponsored by NMSU under authority of the U.S. Deparment of State in support of the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act (Fulbright-Hayes Act) of 1961. The objective of the Exchange Visitor Program is “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchanges.” J Visa services and other support services are coordinated for incoming exchange students, professors, research scholars, short-term scholars, and specialists invited to NMSU.

PROFESSIONAL, ADMINISTRATIVE & STUDENT EMPLOYEE STAFF

Dr. HuntsbergerDr. Paul E Huntsberger, Assistant Dean for Study Abroad & Responsible Officer-Exchange Visitor Program develops study abroad programs, organizes student support services for outbound and inbound students, advises students who want to study on exchange (serves as the ISEP Campus Coordinator), assists students applying to the Gilman Study Abroad scholarship and others, and manages the J-1 visa program for incoming exchange students and scholars. He is Faculty Advisor to the NMSU Rotaract Club and the Study Abroad Ambassadors Club.

CINDYCindy Liechti, Study Abroad Program Facilitator, manages the daily operations of the Office, facilitates enrollments into all programs, and oversees special programs sponsored by the Office.
Erica Butts, Study Abroad Aide, is a Crimson Scholar who organizes the study abroad fairs, advises students about exchange and other study opportunities, and provides administrative assistance to the office. She studied abroad in the UK and is an ISEP Student Ambassador. Rubi Sanchez, Peer Advisor in the Global Village Community and Student Aide, is a Crimson Scholar who develops programs to internationalize the Vista del Monte Residential Apartment Complex that houses incoming exchange students and involves other students and the community to engage in an international experience at NMSU. She also assists incomng exchange students.

LONG-RANGE STRATEGY

  • Support the university’s long-range goals to develop international educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Organize programs that (1) immerse students into the academic environment of the host institution and the cultural environment of the host country, (2) provide opportunities for second-language skill development and practical internships, (3) keep costs affordable to attract a diverse student population, and (4) maintain academic and administrative quality and a safe learning environment
  • Provide support services for inbound and outbound exchange students that are consistent, efficient, and student friendly

PRIMARY GOALS

  1. Develop and manage a sufficiently broad variety of study abroad programs for credit to meet the expressed academic interests of colleges and departments, and the academic needs of students.
  2. Develop and implement academic and administrative procedures for international study that are efficient and supportive of students during program application & enrollment and after reentry, and that are approved by the institution and are implemented consistently campus-wide by academic and non-academic support personnel.
  3. Advocate for sufficient iinstitutional financial and personnel resources to support the university’s current and future international study programs and services at a level equal to peer institutions with similar breath of programs and students served.
  4. Find supplemental sources of funding to (1) develop new international study programs and service initiatives, (2) target the recruitment of students under-represented in international study, and (3) provide scholarships to students with limited economic means to help cover the extra costs of study abroad.
  5. Provide incentives to involve faculty in leading or coordinating international study programs and/or recruiting and advising prospective students
  6. Provide opportunities for students returning from study abroad to serve as ambassadors for recruiting students, advising the office on policy and procedural matters, contributing to service in the community, and advocating for international education statewide.
  7. Increase enrollment of NMSU students in international study programs at a level that is at least at the average enrollment level of NMSU’s peer institution comparison group
  8. Design research instruments to evaluate program effectiveness and to assess outcomes for students in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes affected by study abroad.

MAJOR PROGAM & ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS

  1. Develop and manage study abroad programs — exchanges, intensive language, direct university, internships, group travel, and individual travel — sponsored by the university.
  2. Organize campus-wide study abroad publicity activities.
  3. Provide administrative and advising support for inbound exchange students and outbound study abroad students.
  4. Conduct travel, health and safety orientations for all NMSU students studying abroad .
  5. Monitor official student travel outside the U.S. to assure that the travel complies with NMSU travel policy governing reporting, risk liability, and insurance.
  6. Assist students to identify and compete for locally and nationally sponsored study abroad scholarships.
  7. Track all NMSU students who go abroad while sponsored by NMSU and prepare enrollment reports for NMSU administration and for IIE's Open Doors national report.
  8. Advocate for academic and administrative policies and procedures that consistently and effectively support students studying abroad
