APPLY EARLY: Students who apply successfully for international awards plan early, consult with faculty advisors about their plans and proposals, revise their applications carefully, choose quality study programs abroad, and have high second language skills if required. Deadlines vary so check with the sponsor of the scholarship program.

TYPES COORDINATED FROM STUDY ABROAD OFFICE: Scholarships for Languague Study at affiliated Language Institutes, for University Study on Exchange or with Affiliated University Direct Programs, Regional and National Award Competitions, and Campus-based Awards.

SUCCESS OF NMSU STUDENTS IN OBTAINING SCHOLARSHIPS: Many students have received scholarships to study abroad, although availability has decreased during the current economic crisis. Contact the Assistant Dean for Study Abroad (646-5107 for an appointment) to discuss the scholarship opportunties listed below that NMSU students have competed for successfully. Students who have been most successful in obtaining scholarships that require essays have consulted with the Assistant Dean of Study Abroad, who will review essays before STUDENTS submit them to award sponsors. SOME AWARDS, SUCH AS GILMAN, REQUIRE ENDORSEMENT OF THE ASSISTANT DEAN, WHO WILL ONLY ENDORSE APPLICANTS WHO HAVE DISCUSSED THEIR PROGRAM AND PROPOSED ESSAY WITH HIM. Some Study Abroad Scholarships are coordinated by the Honor's College.

LISTING OF COMMON SCHOLARSHIPS:

AFFILIATED UNIVERSITY AWARDS FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDY:
These affiliates offer scholarships to NMSU students who enroll in their programs: International Studies Abroad-ISA scholarships, American Institute for Foreign Studies (AIFS), and IFSA-Butler ($500 for Summer 2010; $1000 for Spring 2010; $2000 for Academic Year 09-10 or Calendar Year 2010). AUSTRALEARN (GLOBALLINKS) offers several scholarship opportunties for students studying in Australia or New Zealand through them. Awards range from $500 top $3,000. This includes 10 Quantas Airlines awards that pay for the travel.  The scholarships are essay-based (though GPA is also considered), so a student who takes the time and writes a good set of essays has a decent chance at getting some aid.  Essay topics are on financial need, extra-curricular activities, and an explanation of why the student wants to go abroad. ISEP offers the Annette Kade (ISEP) for study on exchange with ISEP in Germany and France , and two $500 scholarships from STA Travel are available each academic year to ISEP students whose home university is located in the USA for roundtrip travel from the United States to their program destination. Annette Kade applicants must be endorsed by the Assistant Dean for Study Abroad at NMSU (Dr. Huntsberger). Students applying to Chukyo University and to Nagoya University of Foreign Studies for academic year exchanges will be considered by those university for Jasso Scholarships that provide a monthly 80,000 yen stipend plus a settling-in allowance (value of about $7,000). Nagoya also has provided NMSU students with monthly stipends of 80,000 year (about $650 per month) to help cover living expenses.

AFFILIATED LANGUAGE INSTITUTE AWARDS FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDY: (APPLICATION)
Variable number of awards for studying Spanish, Portuguese and other languages. Submit by April 15 deadline for summer study, and November 15 for Winter Break if available. Have been provided by BridgeAbroad, NRCSA, Fenix Language Institute, Cuauhnáhuac Language Institute, CPI Costa Rica, PIEE Ronda, Spain but scholarships may be expanded or dropped. Professor Jeff Longwell will select students for these awards.

U.S. GOVERNMENT • PRIVATE FOUNDATION   • NMSU AWARDS FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND/OR GRADUATE STUDY:
Adell & Hancock Fund (AHF) and Nancy Petry (NP) Grants-in-Aid for Study Abroad are available for graduate level study abroad for students in the Rocky Mountain Region Served by the Institute of International Education.
Association of Teachers of Japanese offers Bridging Scholarships for assistance for students planning to study in Japan

Fulbright Graduate Awards (FGA), for study in various countries around the world. Open to graduating seniors and current graduate students. Contact The Office of National Scholarships and International Education, located in the Honors College.

Foundation for Asia Pacific Education (FAPE), awards for study in multiple countries in Asia (Japan, China, Korea, etc.) and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, etc.), $50-$1500, restricted to students studying photography,Film and Art, Travel and Tourism, International Business, International Studies and Foreign Language; three deadlines: April 30 for summer, August 1 for Fall, December 31 for Spring.

Gilman Scholarships for Study Abroad. National competition open to students with Pell Grants, worth up to $5,000. Fill out application on-line. Fall & Academic Year study application deadline April, Spring is October. Recommend that students submit copy of application to Assistant Dean of Study Abroad, who must endorse the application, for review before submitting. Students must have committed to enrolling in an NMSU approved study abroad program by submitting an application and paying the application fee before receiving endorsement.
Gilman Scholarship
to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 25 Critical Need Language Supplements will be offered to Gilman Scholarship recipients during the 2006-2007 academic year.Critical Need Languages include:* Arabic (all dialects)* Chinese (all dialects)* Turkic (Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgz, Turkish, Turkmen, Uzbek)*Persian (Farsi, Dari, Kurdish, Pashto, Tajiki)* Indic (Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Sinhala, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Sindhi)* Korean* Russian.
The Gilman International Scholarship Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, will be piloting a special summer 2010 award cycle for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) field disciplines. The Gilman Program provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Applications for the summer 2010 awards will be available during both the fall and spring application cycles. Students are strongly encouraged to submit their applications during the first application cycle (by the October 6, 2009 deadline) to ensure timely notification of award. Applicants who miss the October 6, 2009 deadline can apply during the second award cycle, but will not be notified of their award status until the first week of May.

NMSU-
Colin Williamson Study Abroad Award
<APPLICATION> • Up to $500 tuition award, 1-2 available each year to undergraduates studying on exchange, April 15 deadline for following academic year. Foundation account administered by the Office of Study Abroad.
Study Abroad Travel Awards are sometimes available from various sources to reimburse students for travel costs.
Other:
Sometimes the International Relations Institute, Colleges, and departments have been able to assist students with small awards to defray study abroad costs.
Honor's College
has been offering a $5,000 scholarship for a student who successfully proposes a specially designed summer project abroad.

NSEP (Boren Scholarships-early February deadline) Undergraduate Awards and (Boren Fellowship-early January deadline) Graduate Awards, emphasize the study of languages less commonly taught. Undergraduate awards are granted up to $10,000 per smester, and graduate awards for language study and international research provide up to $30,000. Some options for French and Spanish. May also study other subjects while studying language. Contact The Office of National Scholarships and International Education, located in the Honors College. The Office of Study Abroad can help with review of proposals.

Phi Kappa Phi -This Honor Society provides Study Abroad Grants up to $1,000 (50 annually) and NMSU undergraduates (PKP members or non-members) with 3.5 GPA are eligible to apply. The next competition deadline for 2010-2011 is February 24, 2010.

Rotary District 5520 Ambassadorial Fellowship -Offered annually with sponsorship of a NM Rotary Club. Requires about a year and one half lead time.

FOREIGN GOVERNMENT AWARDS FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDY:
CDS-The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program Provides scholarships for Germany to youth ages 18-24.

DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service)-Offers scholarships and grants for Germany and has an internship program for Engineers called RISE.

Japanese Government (Mombukagakusho) Scholarships (JASSO) Japanese Studies, Teacher Training, Research, Professional Training, Undergraduate Social Sciences and Humanities and Natural Sciences

ThinkSwiss offers 15 scholarships for a research stay in Switzerland. This scholarship program supports highly motivated and qualified U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to do research at a public Swiss university or research institute for 2 to 3 months. The scholarship is open to students of all fields. Requirements:To apply for a ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship, you must: - Be currently enrolled at an accredited U.S. university/college - Be a graduate student or an undergraduate student who will have completed your sophomore year by the time the research stay in Switzerland begins -Provide a written confirmationfrom a professor at a Swiss university that he/she will accept you for a research stay in his/her group.
