NMSU
sponsors five (5) types of study abroad programs that
allow students to transfer credit to NMSU, to earn
graded NMSU credit, or to engage in non-credit international
activities:
1. University Exchange Programs: Students
enroll in a foreign university for the purpose of earning
transfer credit that applies to their degree at NMSU.
In return, foreign students comes to NMSU on exchange
to take course here to transfer to their home institutions.
Students typically study for a semester or an academic
year, but some exchanges are available in summer.
2. Affiliated
Language Institute Programs: Students
enroll at a language institute to study intensively these
languages taught by NMSU: Spanish, Portuguese, French,
German, Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic. Students typically
study during Winter Break or during Summer, but some
are permitted to study during Fall or Spring semester.
3. Affiliated
University Direct Programs: NMSU
also has several agreements that allow students to earn
academic and language credit, primarily in countries
or at universities with which NMSU has been unable to
arrange exchanges. While this opens up additional options
for our students to study abroad, these programs tend
to be the least cost effective way to study abroad. NMSU
also has entered into agreements with other universities
and organizations to provide special options for NMSU
students to study abroad. Some of these programs provide
opportunities for NMSU faculty members to teach some
of the courses offered through these program. Programs
are offered for a semester, academic year, or summer.
4. NMSU Internship
& Teaching Programs: NMSU departments
organize internships that allow students to enroll at
NMSU and receive NMSU graded credit for the supervised
work experience including student teaching. Students
may also consider enrolling in a Cooperative
Education Program conducted abroad.
5. NMSU Group
or Individual Travel: Some faculty members
organize courses with a field trip or field studies component
required to receive credit for the courses. Other faculty
members organize or supervise groups of students who
travel outside the U.S. as an option in, but not a requirement
of, an NMSU course. Some faculty members supervise students
who are conducting research or engaging in independent
study while enrolled in classes for credit at NMSU, or
who engage in the overseas activity just for the experience.
