AFFILIATED LANGUAGE INSTITUTE PROGRAMS

ELIGIBILITY:
NMSU students in good standing academically (2.0+ grade-point with one semester completed at NMSU or a branch commnity college) and students enrolled at other universities in good standing, or recent high school graduates with a 2.5 grade-point overall may apply to enroll in the intensive language program by distance education option. Intensive language study at language institutes is limited to winter break or summer for NMSU degree seeking students (except when the institute is affiliated with a university). Students will be enrolled in the intensive language by distance education graded (A-F) credit option when available, or they will be enrolled in the transfer credit option.

APPLICATION DEADLINES
Applications should be submitted for  Winter Break and Spring by November 1, and for Summer and Fall by April 1 for regular consideration. Late applications are accepted if placement is possible but late fees apply.

PROGRAM COSTS:
Students will pay NMSU an application processing fee and, for Fall or Spring semester enrollments, an administrative fee. Students will pay the host program tuition, health insurance for each month of enrollment (paid to NMSU if not included in fees paid to host), housing, and meals. Students will pay out-of-pocket for a passport, visa fees (when required), immunizations (when required), travel to location of program, and incidental expenses.  The Office will help you budget for the program to which you decide to apply. Limited scholarships provided by some language institutes may be available.

CURRENT INTENSIVE LANGUAGE PROGRAMS SPONSORED BY NMSU:
ACADEMIA LATINOAMERICANA DE ESPANOL (ALE) has locations in Quito, Ecuador (at Equatorialis Univrsity), in Cuso and Arrequipa, Peru, and Sucre, Bolivia. The program is designed to quickly develop a working proficiency in Spanish.

BRIDGEABROAD (BA) language programs operated by or affiliated with them are located in Latin America, Europe, and Asia Note: All Bridge Abroad sites may not be approved by NMSU for credit. Contact the Foreign Studies Advisor, Languages and Linguistics, to determine what BridgeAbroad sites are approved.

CENTRO PANAMERICANO DE IDIOMAS (CPI) is a private language institute in Costa Rica that offers two campuses approved for Spanish study: Heredia, a small town close to the capital of San José, and Monteverde, located in the mountains in an area famous for its cloud forest reserves. Some students may wish to divide their time between sites and see very different parts of Costa Rica. Class size is maximum of 4. Classes start every Monday, with students arriving on Saturday, and usually leaving on Saturday after their program ends. BACK TO TOP

CUAHNAUHUAC SPANISH LANGAUGE INSTITUTE (CUAH) is located in Cuernavaca, the City of Eternal Spring, and a Mexican colonial city with several hundred thousand residents. The school's many years of experience, the site's closeness to Mexico City, and the variety of cultural and archeological attractions make this a comfortable and attractive site for students with strong interests in Mexico. Classes begin every Monday each week. Students should arrive on Thursday, take placement test on Friday, and start on Monday. At the end of their study, students usually leave Saturday afternoon. Class size is a maximum of 5 students.

FENIX LANGUAGE INSTITUTE (FENIX) is located in Zacatecas, a beautiful Mexican colonial city of about 180,000 people which traverses the geographical border between the desert north and the more tropical, agriculturally developed interior of Mexico. Zacatecas is a tranquil town, and although it is well-known in Mexico for its culture and arts, it receives relatively little North American tourist traffic. Its altitude provides an agreeable climate year round. Fenix maintains a small satellite campus in Chalchihuites, a town of only a few thousand people. Zacatecas is accessible by bus and plane from Juárez. Classes begin every Monday each week. Students should arrive on Friday, take placement test on Saturday, begin classes on Monday. Class size is a maximum of 5.

INSTITUTO CULTURAL DE OAXACA (ICO) is located near the historical center of the old colonial city of Oaxaca, Mexico, a center of archaeology and indigenous art. At an altitude of 5,000 feet, and protected by two mountain ranges, the weather is moderate year round. Oaxaca is ideal for those who want to be away from the crowds. Students arrive on Friday, with testing and orientation on Saturday. Class size is a maximum of 10. The institute operates on a monthly schedule, but students may initiate study on any given Monday.

INSTITUTE PARISIEN (IP) offers French language and civilization courses that start any Monday of the year. Most NMSU students attend in June to take advantage of cheaper flights at the end of May. IP is located on the Boulevard de Grenelle. This program is best for students who want the challenge of learning French in a large city environment. BACK TO TOP

NATIONAL REGISTRATION CENTER FOR STUDY ABROAD (NRCSA) provides immersion foreign language and culture studies throughout the world. Study in multiple cities is encouraged for students wishing to gain insights into cultural perspectives in different countries or regions within the same country. Note: All NRCSA sites may not be approved by NMSU for credit. Contact the Foreign Studies Advisor, Languages and Linguistics, to determine what NRCSA sites are approved.

PROGRAMA INTERNACIONAL DE ESPANOL PARA EXTRANJEROS (PIEE) is located in Ronda, a small town in the mountains of southern Spain, about an hour from the Mediterranean coast. The school is beautifully situated in a former Moorish castle, and Ronda itself is lovely. The town has considerable tourist traffic during the day, but at night reverts to a small, fairly traditional Spanish village. Students appreciate the warmth of the families in Ronda and the opportunities to travel in Spain on the weekends. Classes are organized monthly during summer. Class size varies from 3 to 10 students. Students can live with host families. Students should arrive on the Friday before the Monday start of the monthly program.

Proyecto Linguistico (PL) is one of four non-profit schools of La Hermandad Educativa in Quezaltenango and other towns in Guatemala that offer affordable, quality Spanish language instruction and generate decent-paying jobs and income to support projects that benefit the people of Guatemala. This institute places a special emphasis on human rights and social justice and offers opportunities to participate in community projects. One-on-one instruction; classes start every Monday; placement with host families. Students need to be ready to adjust to living standards different from those of the U.S.

CASA DE ESPANOL (XELAJU) places a special emphasis on human rights and social justice, and offers a variety of field trips and presentations, as well as opportunities to participate in local community projects. While Xelajú also has a site in Antigua, students who want an immersion program away from the tourist traffic will study in Quetzaltenango. Xelajú also offers some opportunities for volunteer work.
