Common Terminology Used
Graded Credit Programs
Study Abroad Programs in which students enroll in NMSU courses (regular courses or contracted distance education courses) but complete part or all of the course requirements outside the U.S. Students receive grades for the course on an NMSU transcript.
Transfer Credit Programs
Study Abroad Programs in which students enroll in courses taught at other universities or institutes, and NMSU agrees to transfer credit. (Students are enrolled at NMSU in a special Study Abroad course, which is changed to reflect transfer credit upon submission of a foreign institution's transcript.)
Non-Credit Optional Travel Programs
Travel outside the U.S. in which students (1) are enrolled in NMSU courses, but the travel is optional in determining grading or credit for the course, or (2) attend conferences or travel abroad in an event sponsored or financed by NMSU.
Types of Study Abroad for Credit Programs
Exchanges: An exchange allows an NMSU student to study in a foreign university and in return NMSU receives a foreign student to study at NMSU. NMSU exchange students pay tuition (and sometimes the cost of housing and meals) to NMSU.
Intensive Language: Language course are established as international distance education to provide graded credit or for transfer credit. Distance education courses have tuition paid to NMSU, but is charged at a special rate that may be less or more than normal tuition. Non-NMSU students may enroll non -degree to earn graded language credit.
NMSU Special Programs: NMSU enters into agreements with other universities and organizations to provide special study options with prices that reflect actual program costs. These usually are completed for transfer credit.
Group Travel Courses for Credit: These usually are courses in which part of the course (such as over Spring Break) is conducted as a field trip, but sometimes the entire course is conducted abroad. In some cases the student enrolls in a regular course, at other times in a contracted distance education course.
Internships: Some departments arrange internships for graded distance education credit or as an official coop program. Students engage in supervised professional activities, such as student teaching, but do not take courses while abroad.
Affiliated Programs: NMSU has affiliated with several private providers of study abroad programs to allow students to study in countries or in universities in which NMSU has not been able to develop its own programs. Students complete these programs for transfer credit.
NMSU Study Abroad Agreements
NMSU uses three Study Abroad Agreements, one for Transfer Credit Programs, one for Resident Student Travel Programs, and one for International Distance Education Graded Credit Programs. The forms are used to collect essential information to approve a students participation in a specific program.
WebCT Orientation
Study abroad courses organized to orient NMSU students prior to departure for study abroad. The courses are mandatory and students may not enroll in the Study Abroad course that provides students status while they study abroad for transfer credit until WebCT has been completed.
Application Processing Fee
A fee paid to the Office of Study Abroad to cover the administrative cost of processing their application to and enrollment in a study abroad program.
Program Administrative Fee
A fee paid to the Office of Study Abroad to cover the on-going administrative costs of managing their study abroad program (usually charged Fall or Spring Semesters only for exchanges and affiliated programs).
Late Processing Fee
An additional fee paid when students do not submit applications and/or complete their WebCT orientation by the priority administrative deadlines set by the Office of Study Abroad.
 Financial Aid
Scholarships, loans, or grants students receive to pay for their studies at NMSU, which can be applied to study abroad costs.
