SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDY ABROAD:
Language Study • Multiple Programs & Countries • Pell Grant Recipients • Asia, Germany, France or Germany, Latin America only
  Are scholarships available for study abroad?
Yes. But students will need to apply early for these and they are competitive. Students who apply successfully for international awards plan early, consult with faculty advisors about their plans and proposals, revise their applications carefully, choose quality study programs abroad, and have high second language skills if required. To keep posted on new scholarship opportunties, subscribe to stdyabrd, a listserve service managed by the NMSU Office of Study Abroad.
Are NMSU students successful in obtaining study abroad scholarships?
Yes. More than 65 students received awards in academic year 2006-2007. Contact the Assistant Dean for Study Abroad (646-5107 for an appointment) to discuss the scholarship opportunties listed below that many NMSU students have competed for successfully. * Denotes that NMSU students have received these awards.

*Intensive Language Study Awards<application>. Variable number of awards for studying Spanish, Portuguese and other languages. Submit by April 15 deadline for summer study, and November 15 for Winter Break if available. only. Currently provided by Bridge Abroad, NRCSA, Fenix Language Institute, Cuauhnáhuac Language Institute, and CPI Costa Rica, but new scholarships may be developed in future
*NSEP (Boren) Undergraduate and Graduate Awards, emphasizes the study of languages less commonly taught. Worth $7,000+ per smester. Some options for Franch and Spanish. May also study other subjects while studying language. Contact The Office of National Scholarships and International Education, located in the Honors College

*IFSA Grants <application>. The International Foundation for Study Abroad (IFSA) has awarded NMSU a yearly grant of $50,0000 for 2006-2007, 2007-2008, and 2008-2009. This award (32 given in 2006-2007) provides NMSU students with demonstrated need for financial assistance to pay the extra costs of study abroad (fees, insurance, passport/visa, travel, etc.) up to $2,000. Students must enroll in semester or academic year programs in selected programs in Canada, Europe, Latin America, and Asia. May 1 deadline for Fall start, October 15 for Spring start.
*Colin Williamson Study Abroad Award <application> • Up to $500 tuition award, 1-2 available each year to undergraduates studying on exchange, April 15 deadline for following academic year.
*Mesilla Valley Rotary Club Award for Study Abroad <application> Up to $1,000, (but usually $500), undergraduate or graduate study, November 1 deadline for Spring, April 15 deadline for Summer or Fall. Note: Awards still available for Spring 2008 programs only.
*ISEP- International Student Exchange Program. ISEP currently offers the Annette Kade scholarship for study in France and Germany, and two $500 scholarships from STA Travel are available each academic year to ISEP students whose home university is located in the USA for roundtrip travel from the United States to their program destination.
*Fulbright Graduate Awards, for study in various countries around the world. Open to graduating seniors and current graduate students. Contact The Office of National Scholarships and International Education, located in the Honors College
*Adell and Hancock Fund (1) and Nancy Petry Grants-in-Aid for Study Abroad, are available for graduate level study abroad to students in the Rocky Mountain Region Served by the Institute of International Educatio
*Rotary District 5520 Ambassadorial Fellowship -Offered annually with sponsorship of a NM Rotary Club. Requires about a year and one half lead time.
HACU-Laureate. NMSU is a member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), and in cooperation with Laureate International Universities, they make possible enrollment in private universites in Europe and Latin America with the possibility of tuition scholarships that range from $350 to $3,100.
*International Studies Abroad (ISA), the American Institute for Foreign Studies (AIFS), IFSA-Butler, and Australearn offer scholarships to NMSU students who enroll in their programs.
Phi Kappa Phi -This Honor Society provides Study Abroad Grants up to $1,000 (50 annually) and NMSU undergraduates (PKP members or non-members) with 3.5 GPA are eligible to apply.
Pell Grant Recipient Only Study Abroad Awards Return to Top
*Gilman Scholarships for Study AbroadNational competition open to students with Pell Grants, worth up to $5,000. Fill out application on-line. Recommend that students submit copy of application to Assistant Dean of Study Abroad, who must endorse the application, for review before submitting.
Asia Only Study Awards Return to Top
*The Association of Teachers of Japanese offers Bridging Scholarships - Offers assistance for students planning to study in Japan. *Freeman Asian Studies Awards -National competion open to students planning to study in Asia, worth up to $7,000 depending on financial need. Recommend that students submit copy of application to Assistant Dean of Study Abroad for review before submitting to award sponsor.
Germany Only Study Awards Return to Top
*CDS-The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program-Provides scholarships for Germany to youth ages 18-24.; *DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service)-Offers scholarships and grants for Germany

*Annette Kade ( ISEP)-study on exchange with ISEP in Germany and France.
Latin America Only Study Awards Return to Top
*THE WILLOUGHBY L. NASON SCHOLARSHIP<application>. From $250 up to $1000 are available each year to qualified NMSU students. Minimum requirements include junior or senior status with at least a 3.0 GPA or graduate status with a minimum 3.5 GPA. . Contact Center for Latin American & Border Studies for more information.
