REGISTRATION, APPROVAL, & PROCEDURES
REGISTRATION
Do students enroll in NMSU courses while studying abroad?
Yes. All NMSU students studying abroad will be registered by the Office of Study Abroad in a Study Abroad Course (for transfer credit programs), in a special distance education course (primarily intensive language programs), or by a course instructor in a regular NMSU course.
Do students enroll in courses at host institutions while studying abroad?
Usually. Most NMSU students studying abroad will be registered in courses at host institutions. Exceptions are group travel as part of an NMSU course and internships which require students to complete work assignments instead of courses.
APPROVAL PROCEDURES
Who approves enrollment in study abroad with NMSU?
Usually the colleges or the course instructor. Students studying in programs for transfer credit will obtain approval for transferring credit from the Associate Dean of their college major (or the AD's designate). Students studying in programs for NMSU graded credit will obtain approval for course enrollment from the course instructor. Students enrolled in courses that involve group travel will obtain approval for participation from the travel organizer. Students enrolling in a COOP program with an international assignment will need approval of the Coop Office.
What forms are used to finalize NMSU approval to participate in a study abroad program or activity?
NMSU uses three Study Abroad Agreements, one for Transfer Credit Programs, one for Resident Student Travel Programs, and one for International Distance Education Graded Credit Programs. The forms are used to collect essential information to approve a students participation in a specific program.
Do undergraduate students require permission to complete their final 30 credits at NMSU?
Yes. Each College is responsible for providing students with a written waiver to complete any of their final 30 credits while studying abroad.
Do students have to complete WebCT orientation and fill out the appropriate Study Abroad Agreement before they are enrolled in study abroad courses?
Yes. Completing WebCVT orientation and filling out the appropriate NMSU Study Abroad Agreement are conditions for being enrolled officially in study abroad courses.
REGISTRATION HOLDS
Will NMSU Place a Hold on Future Registration and Release of Transcripts?
Yes. A hold will be placed on future registration at NMSU, or on the release of transcripts, should a student fail to settle agreed upon financial obligations to NMSU and/or to a host institution.
If I have unpaid charges on my NMSU account, will a hold be placed on enrolling in an upcoming semester's study abroad course?
Yes. Students may not carry over debt into the next semester, so all previous semester balances must be paid in full in order for the Offie of Study Abroad to enroll students. Students studying for the academic year must be certain that the first semester's charges have been paid in full or they cannot be enrolled for the second semester, which may result in denial of financial aid.
