WebCT Study Abroad Orientation
|
| |
Must
all students traveling abroad receive travel
orientation? |
Yes. All
NMSU students who are traveling outside the
U.S., whether to earn credit or not, are required
to receive orientation about the risks inherent
in traveling abroad.
|
| |
Who
provides this travel orientation? |
In
most cases this is provided by the Office of
Study Abroad. Exceptions are made for group travel
programs for which the employees organizing the
travel activity may organize this orientation,
with or without assistance from the Office of
Study Abroad. Employees are provided with a Guide
that will help them focus their orientation on
key issues to be addressed. Students may also
download this Guide in
PDF format. If in doubt about this requirement,
contact the Office of Study Abroad.

How
does the Office of Study Abroad provide its travel
orientation? |
The
Office of Study Abroad has set up WebCT
study abroad travel orientation courses to
provide essential information to students going
abroad about policy, procedures, health and safety
issues, culture shock, and other matters related
to studying in specific countries. Students are
enrolled by the Office of Study Abroad in one
of these courses in either Fall (for Winter Break
of Spring program starts) or Spring (for Summer
or Fall program starts). Completion of study
abroad orientation is a condition of being enrolled
in a program. |
| |
How
does the Office of Study Abroad determine that
a student has been oriented satisfactorily? |
Students
are required to pass two quizzes with a score
of 85% or better. Until these quizzes are passed,
students will not be registered in a study abroad
course. The Office keeps a permanent record of
students who have completed the WebCT orientation
requirements. Students are provided feedback
by e-mail to help them do well in the course.
|
| |
If
a student has completed theWebCT orientation
previously and will study abroad again, does
the student have to complete it again? |
Only
Unit 2 is required if the students is studying
abroad in a different country than studied in
previously. For example, a student who studied
in Mexico in Summer 2007, but now is studying
in Spain Fall 2007, would have to redo Unit 2
from the Spain perspective, since this unit is
country specific.
|
| |
What
is the deadline for completing WebCT orientation? |
Students
enrolled in the orientation course Fall Semester
(for Winter Break or Spring start) have until
December 1. Students enrolled in the orientation
course Spring Semester (for Summer or Fall start)
have until May 1. Students who fail
to complete the WebCT orientation by the deadline
will be assessed a $50 late enrollment fee to
cover staff time to monitor and grade the quizzes. The
WebCT course is open for review year round, but
access to the quizzes during Fall enrollment
stops at 11:55 p.m. on December 1, and during
Spring enrollment stops at 11:55 p.m on May 1.
To complete quizzes late the instructor has to
override these dates.
