What
Application & Administrative Fees are charged
by NMSU? |
The
Office of Study Abroad charges an Application
Processing Fee for most programs to
recover its cost of processing applications and
arranging orientation. The Office of Study Abroad
also charges a Program Administration
Fee to recover on-going administrative
costs to support students who go abroad. Under
certain circumstance, this fee is waived. FEES vary
based on the program and level of administrative
support provided by the Office.
|
| |
Are
there late fees? |
| Yes. Students
who apply after published deadlines, or who fail
to complete WebCT orientation by published deadlines,
are subject to late fees to pay the additional
cost of the Office incurs. |
| |
Are
these fees refundable? |
The
Application Processing Fee is non-refundable except
when a student could not be placed or the program
was cancelled? Students need to be certain
that they want to study abroad before applying.
Students who pay the fee, then withdraw, but
want to reapply to the same or a different
program within one year of paying the fee,
will receive a credit of $100 toward
the next Application Processing Fee.
Program Administration Fees are
also non-refundable after a
student accepts placement offered in
a program. This is considered an unrecoverable
cost. Students entering into a contract
for an academic year program are obligated
to pay the fee for both semesters, even
if they return after one semester.

Do
Program Providers charge an Application Fee in
addition to the NMSU Application Processing Fee? |
Sometimes.
Some programs such as ISEP charge an application
fee paid directly to them. In the case of ISEP
and some other programs with substantial application
fees, the Office waives the Application Processing
Fee to keep the cost of applying to programs
reasonable. Some direct program providers, such
as Language Institutes, also charge a modest
application fee, but some will waive this for
NMSU students.

COSTS

Do
NMSU students always pay NMSU tuition to study
abroad? |
Only
for exchanges, distance education, and some
NMSU travel courses. Students
studying on exchange will
always pay the current full-time NMSU tuition
and fee rate in
effect at the time of enrollment. Students enrolling
in international
distance education courses will also pay
NMSU tuition, but the per credit fee
varies depending on the program. Students enrolling
in special NMSU sponsored programs will also
pay the cost of NMSU tuition. But students enrolling
in affiliated programs pay
tuition to the program sponsor, not
NMSU. In some case, such as language study, students
pay both NMSU tuition and host
institution tuition (instructional fees).
|
| |
Do
NMSU students always pay NMSU for housing, a
meal plan, and travel insurance? |
| Only
for exchanges that include this benefit, or for
some NMSU travel courses. Students
pay NMSU the cost of NMSU housing and meals if
included in the exchange agreement, such as the ISEP programs,
a few other exchanges, and some group travel programs
organized by NMSU. For other programs they will
pay the host institution for these items, or they
will pay private contractors. When the NMSU travel
insurance is waived, the student will have paid
the host program, such as ISEP, for the cost of
travel insurance. |
| |
Do students taking dependents
pay more for assistance, housing and meals? |
Yes. The cost for accommodating dependents is separate
from the costs of the program. Contact the local
provider of services for a statement of costs,
and be sure to get it in writing. The statement
should include the method of payment.
|
| |
How
are housing and meal plan costs calculated when
paying NMSU for these costs to study abroad? |
Housing: NMSU
bases its rates on a two bedroom Vista del Monte
apartment. When provided housing benefits while
abroad, students may live in dorms, apartments,
or with host families, depending on what can
be provided by the host program. The actual amount
of the benefit in US dollars may be higher or
lower than what the NMSU student paid to NMSU. In
some cases, students provided apartments may
be responsible for paying their utility costs.
Meals: NMSU bases its
rates on a full meal plan (19 meals) with
an allowance for when the cafeteria is
closed for official holidays. When provided
meal benefits while abroad, students may
be provided a cafeteria pass, have meals
prepared by the host family, or be given
an allowance to prepare their own meals
or eat out. The actual amount of the benefit
in US dollars may be higher or lower than
what the NMSU student paid to NMSU.

| |
What
type of study abroad program is most affordable? |
As
a general rule, exchanges are more affordable
than other types of semester programs, and intensive
language programs are more affordable for summer
study. The estimated cost of each program is
provided in the Program Type
Overview sections of this web site.
Also a guide for estimating costs of study abroad
is provided under the How
to Plan section of this web site.

The
Office will bill the student's account with University
Accounts Receivables and these charges (tuition,
housing, meal plan, insurance, late fees, etc.)
are payble according to the normal payment schedule
for students. If students have financial aid,

and then the balance will be released to the
student. See Financial
Aid section of FAQs. NOTE:

Will

etc with other providers pay the provider according
to their announced schedules of payment. Contact
the providers directly for instructions. NMSU
will only bill for charges due NMSU.
