PROGRAM FEES, PAYMENT, & REFUND POLICY
PROGRAM FEES
Do guest students pay the same fees as NMSU students? (View current FEES Schedule)
Yes. Guest students are charged the same fees as NMSU students who study abroad.
Do guest students pay application fees?
Yes, to NMSU or to other providers. Students applying to ISEP exchanges or ISEP-direct, or to some other non-exchange programs, through NMSU will pay the application fees to the provider and/or NMSU. For all other exchanges, the Office of Study Abroad charges an Application Processing Fee to recover its cost of processing applications and setting up records on students. Program costs are summarized by the Program Overviews of programs available to guest students. Students may also review the Study Abroad Administrative Fees Schedule.
Do Guest students pay NMSU tuition to study abroad?
YES, for exchanges. Depends, for special programs. Students studying on exchange will always pay the current full-time NMSU tuition and fee rate in effect for undergraduates. Students enrolling in special NMSU sponsored programs will also pay for instructional costs which may be more or less than traditional tuition.
Do Guest students pay NMSU room and meal plans to study abroad?
YES, for ISEP exchanges and some other exchanges. ISEP and some other exchanges are full-benefit programs, so students pay NMSU tuition, room and meal plan rates, then while enrolled at the host university abroad these benefits provided to them by the host institution. Some exchanges, however, are tuition only.
Are any other administrative fees charged by NMSU for study abroad?
Yes. The Office of Study Abroad charges a Program Administration Fee each semester of enrollment to recover on-going administrative costs to support students who go abroad. This fee is charged only if the student attends a program in which they were placed. Under certain circumstance, this fee is waived.
Do guest students pay all costs of study abroad to NMSU?
NO. Students will pay ISEP their application fee and the cost of its mandatory insurance, and if enrolled in ISEP-Direct, they will pay all tuition, housing, and meal plan fees to ISEP, not NMSU. If enrolled in a bilateral exchange for which NMSU charges only tuition, students would pay the host institution or private contractors for the cost of housing, meals, etc.
GUEST SUDENTS MUST VERIFY WHAT MUST BE PAID TO NMSU or to the HOST INSTITUTION.
The estimated cost of each program is provided in the Guest Program Overview section of this web site. Also a guide for estimating study abroad costs is provided under the How to Plan section of this web site.
PAYMENT POLICY
How do guest students pay NMSU for its required charges?
Guest students must pay NMSU's Application Processing Fee by check made out to NMSU, or by credit card. Program applications may not be forwarded without pre-payment.
All other charges payable to NMSU must be paid by credit card. The Office will send the student an e-mail stating the full amount due for tuition, housing, meal plan, administrative fee, (and insurance if student choses NMSU's plan). Students should receive this e-mail message by mid-August for Fall, and mid-January for Spring. Download the Guest Student Agreement for credit card authorization.
How do guest students pay other providers for its required charges?
NMSU will only charge the cost of study abroad due to NMSU to the student's credit card. Anything due to cooperating organizations, such as ISEP for their insurance fee or for the ISEP-Direct program costs, are paid to the cooperating organization according to their policy and payment schedule.GUEST STUDENTS MUST CHECK WITH HOST PROVIDERS TO DETERMINE WITH THEM THEIR PAYMENT SCHEDULE AND THEIR PREFERRED METHOD OF PAYMENT.
Will guest students home institution's financial aid be paid directly to NMSU.
No. Guest students are responsible for these payments. Their home institution may help them receive financial aid, but this aid may not be available at by the deadline for paying for the NMSU study abroad program. The Office of Study Abroad will provide program cost statements upon request, and verify that NMSU financial aid is not being provided to the guest student. Students need to be aware that program fees will be due upon receipt of the NMSU e-mailed invoice (mid-August and/or mid-January). Students need to be ready to cover the payment with a credit card.
REFUNDS
Are Application Processing Fees refundable?
No, unless the guest student could not be placed or the program was cancelled? Students need to be certain that they want to study abroad before applying. Students who pay the fee, then withdraw, but want to reapply to the same or a different program within one year of paying the fee, will receive a credit of $100 toward the next Application Processing Fee. (For ISEP, follow their refund policy.)
  Are Program Administration Fees refundable?
No. Once guest students accept placement in a program, they are liable for the Program Administration Fee as an unrecoverable cost. Students entering into a contract for an academic year program are obligated to pay the fee for both semesters, even if they return after one semester.
Are tuition, room and meal plan payments refundable?
Not always. Once guest students accept placement in a program and have been invoiced the required tution, housing, and meal plan fees, if students withdraw NMSU may only refund recoverable costs of the program. What is recoverable depends on whether or not the host exchange university agrees to adjust the exchange balance to zero. If they refuse to adjust the exchange balance to zero, no refund is possible since NMSU is obligated to pay for their incoming student.
