Are
high school students eligible to study in the
Language Credit via Distance Education Program? |
| No. Students
must have earned a high school degree or its equivalent
to be admitted to NMSU in non-degree status in
this program. |

Are
college students eligible to study in the Language
Credit via Distance Education Program? |
YES.
College students who are in good standing
academically (not under probation or suspension) at
a college or university currently in which they
are currently enrolled or in which they were
last enrolled are eligible to apply in this program.
They may request that NMSU forward the NMSU transcript
to their current school of record to be considered
for transfer credit recognition.

Do
students have to be U.S. citizens to study in
this program? |
No. This
program is open to any qualified student. U.S.
permanent residents will have to provide the
Form I-551 to prove this status for admission
purposes. International students studying in
the U.S. on the F-1 or J-1 visa would have to
obtain permission from their Foreign Student
Office to study in this program and to be able
to travel abroad and return legally to the U.S.

May
students with special needs study in this program? |
Yes. Study
abroad is open to all students. However, students
with special physical or psychological support
needs must check with the host language institution
to determine that these needs can be accommodated.
If the needs cannot be accommodated, then the
host institution does not need to accept a student.

Where
do prospective DEIL students obtain application
forms? |
The
application and guide is available from the Office
of Study Abroad at NMSU. A fillable PDF version
(requires Adobe Reader 5.0 or higher) is available
by clicking HERE.
In some cases, NMSU's partner language institutes
may have the application and guide available
on their web site. MAKE
SURE TO USE THE MOST RECENT VERSION DATED 6-7-2007.
This version supercedes all other versions, including
those reproduced by affiliated institutes.

Do
DEIL students also need to apply to the host
language institute? |
| YES. The
Office of Study Abroad is admitting and enrolling
you as a non-degree NMSU student. But you still
have to apply to the language institute at which
you will receive the intensive language training
approved by NMSU. Consult the list
of approved programs. |

Does
NMSU have priority deadlines for applying to
the Language Credit by Distance Education Program? |
No,
but these dates are recommended. Priority
deadlines for being recorded as enrolled for Fall
semester is October1;
for Spring semester is April
1; for Summer Session 1 is June
1; for Summer Session 2 is August
1. Enrollment in the desired semester
for which credit will be recorded cannot be guaranteed
if these deadlines are not met.
