Application Procedures for Language Credit by Distanced Education (DEIL): ELIGIBILITY • FORMS • DEADLINES & LATE FEES
ELIGIBILITY
Are high school students eligible to study in the Language Credit via Distance Education Program?
No. Students must have earned a high school degree or its equivalent to be admitted to NMSU in non-degree status in this program.
Are college students eligible to study in the Language Credit via Distance Education Program?
YES. College students who are in good standing academically (not under probation or suspension) at a college or university currently in which they are currently enrolled or in which they were last enrolled are eligible to apply in this program. They may request that NMSU forward the NMSU transcript to their current school of record to be considered for transfer credit recognition.
Do students have to be U.S. citizens to study in this program?
No. This program is open to any qualified student. U.S. permanent residents will have to provide the Form I-551 to prove this status for admission purposes. International students studying in the U.S. on the F-1 or J-1 visa would have to obtain permission from their Foreign Student Office to study in this program and to be able to travel abroad and return legally to the U.S.
May students with special needs study in this program?
Yes. Study abroad is open to all students. However, students with special physical or psychological support needs must check with the host language institution to determine that these needs can be accommodated. If the needs cannot be accommodated, then the host institution does not need to accept a student. For more information about access to study abroad for students with special needs, contact Mobility International USA.
APPLICATION FORMS
Where do prospective DEIL students obtain application forms?
The application and guide is available from the Office of Study Abroad at NMSU. A fillable PDF version (requires Adobe Reader 5.0 or higher) is available by clicking HERE. In some cases, NMSU's partner language institutes may have the application and guide available on their web site. MAKE SURE TO USE THE MOST RECENT VERSION DATED 6-7-2007. This version supercedes all other versions, including those reproduced by affiliated institutes.
Do DEIL students also need to apply to the host language institute?
YES. The Office of Study Abroad is admitting and enrolling you as a non-degree NMSU student. But you still have to apply to the language institute at which you will receive the intensive language training approved by NMSU. Consult the list of approved programs.
