When
are NMSU undergraduate students eligible to
apply to study abroad?
|
Undergraduates
may apply to study abroad on exchange or
in an intensive language program after
having completed one semester full-time at
NMSU. Undergraduates enrolled in a course that
takes students outside the U.S. have no semester
attendance restriction since enrollment is approved
by the course instructor.
|
|
|
When
are NMSU undergraduate students eligible to
enroll in an exchange program?
|
While
undergraduates may apply for admission to an
exchange program after having completed one semester
full-time at NMSU, they must have completed two
semesters full-time at NMSU or other colleges
and universities before enrolling in
an exchange program.
|
|
|
Do
students need to speak a language other than
English to study abroad?
|
No. Many
programs are conducted in English in Canada,
Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. However,
some programs will require students on exchange
to have sufficient language skills to study courses
in the language of the program. Students who
want to learn a second language—Spanish,
Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, German, French,
etc.—have many opportunities to study these
language intensively for credit
|
|
|
May
students study as a senior?
|
Yes. Students
may study abroad as seniors, but they
will have to receive permission from their college
to do any of their last
30 credits abroad in transfer credit status.
Seniors also have to know that studying in their
last semester for transfer credit may delay their
date of graduation due to delays in transferring
credit. Seniors studying via distance education
courses are not subject to the waiver rule and
their credit will be recorded as soon as a grade
for the course is submitted.
|
| |
How
many times may students study abroad? |
There
is no limit to the times students may study abroad
as long as students receive permission from their
college to transfer credit toward their degree
or to enroll in a course for graded NMSU credit.
|
| |
May
students study abroad and also study on National
Student Exchange? |
Yes. Students
may study both abroad and on the National Student
Exchange Programs. The biggest problem is being
able to fill out applications for either program
when away from the campus. Students need to carefully
plan how they will do this. Students
currently out on NSE will have to be interviewed
by the Assistant Dean for Study Abroad before
being approved for an NMSU exchange.
|
| |
May
students with special needs study abroad? |
Yes. Study
abroad is open to all students. However, students
with special physical or psychological support
needs must check with the host institution to
determine that these needs can be accommodated.
If the needs cannot be accommodated, then the
host institution does not need to accept a student.
For more information about access to study abroad
for students with special needs, contact Mobility
International USA.

|
Does
NMSU have one application form for study abroad? |
No. After
consulting with the Office of Study Abroad
and their advisors, students apply to the study
abroad program they have selected, such as
ISEP. The only time NMSU would have an application
is when NMSU is operating a program overseas.
Copies of most application forms are maintained
by the Office of Study Abroad, but some applications
may also be accessed on-line.
|
| |
Do
study abroad applications require supporting
documentation? |
|
Yes.
In addition to filling out the application, students
may need to submit an official transcript of
all universities attended, faculty references,
statements of purpose, course selection preferences,
medical history, and other information that is
needed to make a placement decision.

DEADLINES & LATE FEE |
| |
Does
NMSU have priority deadlines for applying and
completing requirements for study abroad? |
YES. The
Office of Study Abroad has priority
administrative deadlines by
which the student has to submit an
application, pay the application or processing
fee, and complete WebCT orientation.
For programs that start: Spring Semester by October
15, Summer I or II by May
1, Fall Semester by May
1, and Winter Break by November
1. While
applications will be considered after NMSU's
priority deadlines if the host program is still
accepting them, students are subject to late
orientation fees.
|
| |
Are
NMSU's administrative deadlines the same as
the application deadlines of the organizations
offering the study abroad program? |
NO.
Many of the organizations NMSU has partnered
with, such as ISEP, have their own application
deadlines which may be earlier than NMSU's priority
deadline. These
are noted in the program
type overview section of this web
site. Students
must apply to the program of their choice by
the host's deadline, and then complete WebCT
orientation and pay NMSU processing fees by NMSU's
priority administrative deadlines listed above.
|
| |
What
is the financial penalty for applying after the
priority admin istrative deadlines set by the
Office of Study Abroad? |
The
processing fee is increased by $50 to
cover the cost of processing applications late
and implementing the WebCT orientation program. Students
are encouraged to apply early for all programs
to increase their chances of being admitted to
the program desired and to avoid late fees.
