| Description
of Travel Problems Reported (BACK
TO TOP) |
Below
are the descriptions of the travel problems encountered
by students:
|
| TRAVEL
TO COUNTRIES |
| BRAZIL: • Had
problems getting the correct dates on the visa. • Varig
airlines went bankrupt and shut down the
day group arrived in Brazil.
COSTA
RICA: • (2)
Luggage came a day late, which is not uncommon
on flights to San Jose. • Used SANSA,
a Costa Rican airline, and charged $40
for excess
luggage and had to pay by cash. •
Passport arrived day supposed to depart,
so had to delay one day. Flight out of
Houston delay for 3 hours, and by time
to arrive in Costa Rica fog was bad and
had to land in Nicaragua and spend the
night.
FINLAND: • Checked bagged
lost going to and from Finland and severely
damaged.
MEXICO: • Going alone
at night was difficult. • Bus
to Zacatecas was not direct, as I was told
by the bus station
clerk. • Cost
$150 to get from El Paso to Juarez bus
station!
Reliability
of information for public transportation
was totally inadequate. • I
misunderstood the cost of the bus trip
to Zacatecas so
I
was under budgeted (budgeted for $70, but
cost $170).• Bus
to Zacatecas was horrible. • Drove
to site and toll roads were high cost. • Booking
flight with credit card with Mexican airlines
failed. Also, had protractor from backpack
removed at security since it was sharp. • Shuttle
driver from Greyhound station in El Paso
wouldn't wait for students to get tourist
card, so student
had to pay extra to take a taxi from border
to Juarez bus station.
GERMANY: • Baggage
lost.
JAPAN: • Typhoon
hit country as arriving, so had to find
alternate transport (bullet train) at extra
costs.
NEW
ZEALAND: Lost plane tickets, had to
pay for new ticket in LA over the phone and had
to take different flight than planned.
SPAIN: Not
aware I needed an additional flight that I had
to book to get to the city I studied in. |
| ENTRY
IN COUNTRIES |
BOLIVIA: • Upon
entering was questioned extensively by immigration
officers suspicious of my purpose of being there.
MEXICO: • Didn't
have passport or birth certificate required to
enter Mexico.
UK: • Student
didn't go with British Studies London group flight
so has some problems entering since didn't have
proper program letters.
|
| TRAVEL
IN COUNTRIES |
ARGENTINA: • Bus
system was difficult to master.
BOLIVIA: • Ran
into one roadblock while traveling in the country.
COSTA
RICA: • Mix
up on information for trip from airport to site,
so had to pay more. •
Difficult knowing and using the bus routes with
limited Spanish. •
Difficulty with taxi drivers who charged Americans
too much.
PERU: • Flights
often delayed causing student to miss flight
home and to pay more than expected.
SPAIN: • Didn't
understand train travel in terms of cost (more
expensive than flying).
